Rotifers

Thousand celled critters found in pond scum

These are fascinating to watch. They are found in mud puddles. Simply add some organic decaying food and a pinch of sugar once a week to feed these critters.

Notice how well you can see the internal organs.

These images were taken in 2010 at 10X with a 785 nm source and ~3ms exposures.

Slow-moving Rotifer

Here is one that is slowly moving as it is digesting something. Taken with the same settings as the above image.

(left upper) This is a bright field image — what you would see in a traditional white light microscope.

(right upper) This is an interferogram — one of four channels that are simultaneously recorded with the 4D pixelated phase camera.

(left lower) This is the phase data that is calculated by combing the 4 interferogram channels. The pseudo-color scale is related to the optical thickness of the critter. Denser areas are red and less dense areas are blue.

(right lower) This is a 3D view of the same data.

Rotifer Chasing Paramecium

A fast moving Rotifer chasing after some yummy paramecium. Taken at 10C and 785 nm illumination with ~3 ms exposures.
